World Bank lauds Delta’s effective implementation of NG-CARES programme

The World Bank has applauded the achievements of the Federal Cares Support Unit’s Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme.

The World Bank Task Team Leader, Mr. Lire Ersado, made the commendation on Tuesday during the South-South Independent Verifications Performance Review meeting held in Asaba, Delta State.

Ersado revealed that the World Bank had committed $700 million to support NG-CARES nationwide, while praising Delta State for its significant counterpart funding and effective implementation.

“Delta State has been one of the leading contributors to this programme.

“Even though the Federal Government accessed N2.2 billion, Delta’s commitment stands out.

“What matters most to the World Bank is not just the funds spent, but how the programme is improving lives on the ground.

“The focus is on measurable, real-life improvements for beneficiaries, from farmers and small businesses to vulnerable households,” Ersado said.

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, commended the World Bank, the Federal Government, and participating state governments for their collaboration in launching and sustaining NG-CARES.

He noted that while the programme was initially designed to cushion the socio-economic shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has since evolved into a comprehensive grassroots development initiative.

“The impact of NG-CARES in Delta State is remarkable.

“We have reached over 306,177 direct beneficiaries and more than 1.2 million indirect beneficiaries. The program has not only alleviated poverty but also stimulated economic growth and empowered our communities,” he said.

The governor highlighted that discussions at the review meeting focused on the upcoming NG-CARES 2.0, which will adopt a Community Action approach.

This model empowers communities to identify their own needs, implement local solutions, and take ownership of interventions, including the construction and rehabilitation of social infrastructure.

“By putting communities at the heart of planning and implementation, NG-CARES 2.0 will deliver deeper impact, stronger accountability, and more sustainable development,” he emphasised.

Oborevwori also noted the pivotal role of Independent Verification Agents (IVAs) in ensuring the credibility, transparency, and objectivity of program assessments, with stakeholders agreeing that the review would guide future engagement strategies, particularly for NG-CARES 2.0.
